Teens and Tweens

Welcome to the roller coaster years! Are you ready to relive puberty and adolescence, complete with all the angst and drama?
This workshop will focus on physical, emotional, social and cognitive developmental issues related to youth ages 8-18. We will examine the competing needs and drives of students in upper elementary grades, middle school, and high school. Class participants will examine ways to create effective learning environments and tasks based on these developmental issues.
The impact of popular culture on students of this age group is a key component of this class. We will also examine television, film, music and gaming popular with young people in order to better understand the messages (positive and negative) and the impact on our classrooms and families.

Karen Burcroff obtained her Undergraduate and Graduate degrees from Elmira College. She then obtained another graduate degree and her Administrative Certificate from SUNY Brockport.  Karen did post-graduate work at University  of Rochester in their Educational Leadership program. Karen taught in Waterloo for eight years (3rd and 5th grade).  She was the Honeoye Elementary School Principal for 3 1/2 years and

Union Springs principal for 4 years [also District Tech Coordinator for 2 years and District Curriculum Coordinator for 2 years].

 

 

Elementary Literacy

 

K-5 Running Records                                               

Running records are a tool for coding, scoring, and analyzing a child’s reading. They give the teacher valuable information about the reader and are used to inform teaching.

Participants will explore:

What are running records?  Why use running records?  Taking a running record.  Marking a running record.  Scoring a running record.

Interpreting a running record.  Informing your teaching. Making teaching decisions.

AUDIENCE: Elementary

 

K-3 Guided Reading

Guided reading provides the framework to ensure that students are able to apply strategies to make meaning from print. The goal of guided reading is for students to use these strategies independently on their way to becoming fluent, skilled, habitual, passionate, independent readers.  Participants will explore: what guided reading is, the elements of a guided reading lesson, the elements of a strategy lesson, book characteristics, what a leveled book collection is, and options for managing the rest of the class.

PRESENTER: Katie Wears, Weedsport Central School District   AUDIENCE: Elementary

For three years, Katie taught kindergarten in the Paulding County School District, Georgia. When she returned to New York State, she secured a job in Weedsport, New York where she taught first grade for three years. She is currently a Literacy Coach at Weedsport Elementary School.  Her teaching experience and training has provided her with a background in knowledge of curriculum, teaching and learning in a standards-based classroom, and summative and formative assessment, as well as balanced literacy.

She has attended the Heinemann Workshop on Units of Study for Intermediate Grades by Lucy Calkins, October 2009. She has also attended The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project February 2007 Institute on the teaching of reading at Columbia University and The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project June/July 2009 Institute on the teaching of writing at Columbia University.

 

Framework for Understanding Poverty

During this session we will begin to understand the “Frameworks” that Ruby K. Payne has developed in her research of poverty.  During this time of economic distress this research does have an impact as to the way educators think about and respond to students/families living in poverty.  We will focus on the realities of:

a.      The research of poverty                 

b.       Causes of poverty 

c.       Rural and urban poverty

d.      Generational and situational   Poverty

e.      Patterns of poverty

f.        The hidden rules of economic class

g.      The two sets of rules          

h.      Two things that help someone move

Technology Corner

 

Hello, my name is Brandon Murphy and I am the new Technology Specialist at the Cayuga Onondaga Teacher Center.  I am a graduate of the Auburn School District. I have a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Social Studies from Niagara University.  My master’s degree is in School Administration and Supervision also from Niagara University.  For the past five years I have worked at the Cayuga Onondaga BOCES as a classroom teacher.  Last year I had the opportunity to work for the Cayuga Onondaga Teacher Center as a Program Assistant. I am thrilled with my new role as Technology Specialist and I am excited to help teachers seamlessly integrate technology into their classroom instruction.  I will hold presentations at the Teacher Center but I will also be available to come right to your school and help teachers who have technology concerns or teachers who want to integrate more technology in their teaching.  All time spent with me will count as professional development hours and all instruction is free of charge.  Please call me at 258-5665 if I can be of service to you.  Thank you.

 Classroom Technology Overview                     January 26

Get introduced to smart boards, electronic chalkboards, classroom response systems, digital video cameras and a number of other useful technologies for the classroom.  Get started using technology in the classroom.

 

Streaming Video                                                    January 28

Find out how to use not only the existing BOCES streaming video system and several others. Start downloading clips and much more. Teachers will leave with a better understanding of streaming video and the capabilities to access the various video databases. This course will also look at using streamed video in class. Replace those old boring videos today!!!

 An Introduction to Moodle                               February 2

School Districts and BOCES throughout New York State are implementing Moodle as the tool of choice for K-12 educators to provide content and activities via the web. Participants will be introduced to the Moodle Course Management System and experience its capabilities by adding “Resources” and more to a Moodle environment.

Teachers do not need their own Moodle accounts to attend. This course is for the pure beginner!

 

Technology in the Elementary Classroom         February 4

This class is designed to show the elementary teacher how to incorporate technology into their curriculum. Skills will be identified and steps outlined to lead students on how to save files, word process, create presentations and use the Internet. Useful web sites will be listed and new technology for Elementary Teachers will be discussed.

Education in the twenty-first century should focus on the development of authentic literacy skills for students. Learning to read, write, listen, speak, critically analyze information and communicate ideas using a variety of modalities is vital for children of all ages. Some of the most frequent complaints of writing teachers, however, revolve around a lack of student motivation to write. How can teachers increase students’ desire to express themselves effectively and appropriately? One of the most basic and powerful ways to increase student motivation to write and communicate is to change student perceptions of audience.  Teachers can now challenge students to publish for a global listening  and viewing audience via a classroom podcasts, vodcasts or digital video. This class provides an overview of the benefits of classroom podcasts, vodcasts and digital videos and showcases several exemplary examples teachers and students can use as models when creating their own.
